Building Literacy in Your Home

May 15, 2014

As a teacher, I am always asked what to do to improve literacy at home. Now that my focus has shifted to toddlers and preschoolers, I am asking myself this question. So I did some research to help out my parents and provide some tips and resources.

A book I am currently reading is helping a lot with helpful ways to make your home a literacy rich environment called Montessori Read & Write: A Parents' Guide to Literacy for Children Paperback – August 1, 1998 by Lynne Lawrence.Let me know if you would like to borrow it- sharing is caring!!!

One of the most important pioneers in the area of child development, Maria Montessori opened the first Children's House in Rome in 1907. Today, there is a network of Montessori schools around the world. This text makes the acclaimed methods used in those schools available to all parents who wish to give their child the best possible start on the road to reading and writing. There are sections on how to create an environment which gives the best chance for language to flourish, the first steps towards reading and writing, and learning to write the letters. This book contains age-graded games and activities to aid learning, and has a resources section designed to be appropriate for different geographical regions and/or languages. It includes a reading list, resources list and suggestion for scripts.

Also, those of you that know me, know how a fan I am of Pinterest!!

There are many activities that are montessori based that you can extend in your home.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • http://www.pinterest.com/pin/365917538446668409/(Excellent idea for singular and plural nouns) Children will enjoy learning the difference between one and more than one object too)

Let me know if you do any of these at home with your little one! WE would love to hear about it!!
